Arnel celebrated his 41st birthday in Toronto, Canada where Journey is having a concert. Couple of his friends flew to Canada to be with him on his birthday.
Happy Birthday, Arnel !!!
THE TRIP:
Beth and myself arrived Toronto at 6:45am. Had our breakfast at a snack place inside the airport. Picked up our car rental, and drove to our hotel.
MEET AND GREET:
Due to loss hours of driving looking for our hotel/hotel's parking garage and had a short rest, we were not able to see Arnel in his hotel. We were to see him at the venue instead.
Agnes aka agee1304 met us at our hotel. We had lunch around 3pm at a japanese restaurant and we drove straight to Molson to avoid the Friday traffic. We thought we can get in to see Arnel around 5pm but we do not have our tickets yet. Ours arrive around 7pm, we went to the backstage area but the security guard told us to come back around 8:30pm. We then went to our seating area to watch Cheap Trick. We were on the elevated section dead center next to the lower level close to the stage. Beth received a call from Jose that Arnel has been waiting for us. We went back to the place where we'll see him and waited for someone to pick us up. We have been walking around the venue with 3 big bags of gifts for Arnel. Jose went out to pick up the bags of gifts from us and we were left outside without seeing Arnel. But I guess Arnel asked his bodyguard to pick us up. We only have few minutes to say hi to Arnel. Jose graciously shot a group photo with Arnel, Beth, Agnes and myself. We were forewarned that we cannot hug Arnel to prevent him from getting sick, but it was Arnel who first gave us a hug. We can tell Arnel wants to spend more time and chat with us but his security already escorted him out to prepare for their performance. Oh yes, I asked for a photo opportunity with the meet and greet person Chuck, hoping that next time he will remember me, hehehheeh.

THE CONCERT:
While waiting for our ticket, we saw several who were trying to get some tickets and the people on the ticket booths told them, its sold out. At 5pm, the door opened and flow of people were none stop. By the time Heart finished their stint, the place was packed. The show coincide with the first day of the Toronto Film Festival and you would think that people would be flocking the downtown area to get a glimpse of famous hollywood people. But no, 15000 was at Molson Amphitheatre to watch Journey, Heart and Cheap Trick.
Enjoyed both Cheap Trick and Heart performance. But we flew to Toronto for Arnel's birthday which coincide with Journey's Toronto concert. It was another great performance by the band. My throat and my feet is soar from screaming and dancing. I was up on my feet dancing with the couple on my right, with Beth and Arnel's friend Patricia who flew from Hongkong. Crowd were so ecstatic about Journey that they were hugging, yelling, and singing their lungs out.
Prior to entering the stage, the huge screens flashed showing the guys backstage with their customary huddle and came out one by one pointing to the cameras. They opened the night with Never Walk Away. Audience went wild on Don't Stop Believin', Anyway You Want It, Separate Ways and Wheel in the Sky. It was pandemonium, majority were dancing, singing, clapping, screaming and were in to the music. Arnel looks just fine, and we all know he is a spirit fighter when he is on the stage. Arnel was very relaxed and as usual gave another great performance. You don't see any hint that Arnel was sick a few days ago. He was AP, AMAZING and PERFECT for the band. I was extremely happy for my fave band Journey, I have smiles and tears for our J boys. They are back and the band sounded better than ever. Ross gave Arnel a compliment when, after the first lyrics to Open Arms, he clapped his hands, and gently bowed his head towards AP. At the end of one of the songs, Arnel and Neal gave each other a hug in the middle of the stage, showing their affection for each other. Jon as well gave Arnel a hug. Arnel sang his heart out, he showed how much he loved singing, be on the stage to entertain. He also acknowledge his kababayans and even said mabuhay. He also thanked his friends who flew to Toronto on his birthday.

I can't recall the exact words and in which song, Arnel pointed on me and Beth and said "you two ...........
There was no birthday song but there were banners around. Arnel's friend Patricia who flew from Hongkong had a banner made from the Philippines. With the help of two american guys, we hang it on the railing infront of us. Neal acknowledged it was Arnel's birthday.

Arnel wore jeans, black shirt with the jacket he wore in his debut performance as Journey's lead singer in Chile. When Jon was warming up to Open Arms, Arnel changed to a red shirt with black Guess jacket (which was a birthday gift from Dra. Malou Vales aka malou1 from APIFS and APOW). While walking back to our car, I called malou to tell her that Arnel was wearing the jacket she gave him as a birthday gift. But it did not sink in to her until she saw the youtube video of Open Arms. Next morning, I saw her text message on my cell extremely happy that he indeed wore the jacket she gave him.
THE CROWD:
The crowd were awesome. There probably is 30% Filipinos and the rest are non-filipinos. There were from different age categories but a lot from the younger age groups. The younger ones were out there to dance and have fun. Lots of teens/kids wearing Journey shirt. The teens in front of the stage were up on their feet throughout the show. I was really very pleased and happy for the band with the crowd's reception, and of course especially for Arnel. The older generation who have been Journey fans all these years have been dancing and singing as well. Where we are seated, we are surrounded by non-filipinos and they all seem to enjoy the show.

Arnel's 41st birthday with Journey at Molson Amphitheatre in Toronto, Canada
I saw myself flashed on the screen with the Canadian couple on my right side grooving to the music, another precious moment for me to reminisce. I was hoping someone has captured that moment and was overjoyed Arnel's friend Jose did, thanks so much Jose.
Leaving the venue, you can tell that everybody had a great time and overheard nice comments not only on Arnel but the Journey band itself.
We met couple of forum friends, njoy and cambridge girl from JF; merle and proudsister from APOW.
